Grape varieties

A majority of white-juiced Gamay noir, but also a few Chardonnay vines that add finesse (1%)

Terroir

This is Château Thivin’s historic vineyard, it was already planted with vines in the 14th century, as shown by an inscription on the lintel of a small cave that reads “1383”.

This walled vineyard at the foot of Mont Brouilly face south-west; the soil is deeper and a proportion of pink granite is mixed with the magmatic rock of the hill.

Cultivation

The vines are at a density of 7,000 vines/ha laid out with grassed and flower strips for the diversification of the flora and to let our small, light tractors through. We alternate tilling with controlled natural grassing. In Winter, a small herd of sheep graze in the walled vineyard. The grapes are picked exclusively by hand.

Vinification

Partially stripped, grid maceration for 10–14 days in our hillside cellars, maturing in oak tuns for 7–9 months.

Tasting

Garnet red with bluish glints, bouquet of iris, peonies, round on the palate with black fruits, spices, long, silky finish. This full-bodied wine is ideally enjoyed between 2 and 7 years old, and depending on the vintage, up to 10 years

Côte-de-Brouilly «Clos Bertrand» Ratings and awards

«This 2023 Côte de Brouilly Le Clos starts with a reductive, smoky nose that softens with air, revealing notes of plum, brown spice, chocolate and licorice, framed by violet aromas. The dark hues on the nose transition to more vibrant ones on the palate with the influence of its acidity, with layers of sous-bois and eucalyptus for further freshness. Powdery, loose-knit tannins dust the cheeks and provide a boundary for the wine's rounded and expansive profile, allowing the wine to glide seamlessly along palate. This is a standout wine of great depth that I look forward to tasting with more time in bottle.»

«This excellent Cote-de-Brouilly is quite closed on the nose but has very good concentration. Plenty of ripe-strawberry, wild-blackberry and violet aromas on the really elegant, medium-bodied palate. The fine tannins build impressively in the long, complete finish, which is velvety and delicately spicy. From wire-trained vines planted between 2004 and 2008 but with a density of 7,000 vines per hectare. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now but best from 2026.»

«For an appellation that can have quite a firm structure, this has a lovely fleshiness and silky tannins. Interwoven with the ripe red berry and cherry aromas is a thin streak of blood oranges that lifts it very nicely. From vines planted between 2004 and 2008 and trained on wires, but with a density of 7,000 vines per hectare. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.»

«From an outcropping of pink granite in the historic southwest-facing enclosed vineyards of the Château Thivin, the 2021 Côte de Brouilly Clos Bertrand wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet plums, berries and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, it's beautifully refined and elegant, with melting tannins, succulent acids and a long, perfumed finish.»
James Suckling

«An extremely charming and quite fleshy wine for the challenging vintage. From the vineyards around the Chateau. Plenty of raspberry and strawberry fruit plus a touch of blood orange character on the nose and front palate, then a very smoky finish. Drink or hold.»

La Tulipe Rouge

4/4

«Une certaine idée de la finesse convoque immédiatement la Bourgogne dans les débats d’amateurs. C’est sûrement pour cela que cette cuvée est qualifiée de bourguignonne. Modèle de délicatesse et d’harmonie, Clos Bertrand possède cette classe naturelle, ce délié qui le rend si authentique dans sa construction. Comme si durant sa naissance le vin décidait d’échapper à ses maîtres pour trouver sa plénitude dans un style qui nous émerveille. Magnifique vin. During discussions about finesse in wine, Burgundy immediately springs to mind. And this wine is clearly Burgundian in its delicately harmonious style. Clos Bertrand is naturally classy, stylish and perfectly constructed. It is almost as if, during its birth, it freed itself from its genitors to develop this full style that we found so wonderful. A magnificent wine!»

«Aromas of berries, flowers and tangerines follow through to a medium-bodied, linear palate with a tight structure and a driven finish. This will age nicely. Give it a year to open, but delicious already.»

«Raised in foudre and derived from the historic southwest-facing enclosed vineyards of the Château Thivin, the 2018 Côte de Brouilly Clos Bertrand reveals aromas of plums, cherries and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered wine that's quite muscular and serious in this often open-knitt vintage, with impressive depth and concentration—and good tension too. This will reward some bottle age.»
James Suckling

«"Very impressive purety of fruit and complexity on the nose with subtleness at the same time. It's very tight and compact with beautiful focus and intensity. So long at the finish with ripe fruit and ligth toffee. Fantastic."»

«Pure violets on the nose suck you into the very elegant, sleek palate. The pronounced, finegraines tannins support beautifully the long, pristine and mineral finish.»

«Mid cherry red. Darker fruited, more of that granite fragrance. Inviting peppery freshness but no stemmy notes. Tighter than Les Sept Vignes but very crunchy dark-red fruit. A touch of that peony character. Dry and very-fine-grained tannins. Slightly more austere on the finish. Chewy, grippy. (JH)»
